There are some wedding venues that are beautiful, and then there are venues that seem to tell a story all on their own. Star Hill Ranch in Bee Cave, https://www.starhillranch.com/ is definitely one of those places. With its historic buildings, charming Main Street, beautiful oak trees, and Texas Hill Country atmosphere, it is an incredible setting for a wedding—and an amazing place for a photographer to tell the story of a couple’s day.
I recently had the opportunity to photograph Annie and Alex’s wedding at Star Hill Ranch, and their day was filled with everything I love about wedding photography: genuine emotion, beautiful portraits, fun moments with family and friends, and plenty of memories involving the people who mean the most to them.
And for Annie and Alex, that included their child, who added an especially meaningful element to their wedding day.
A Beautiful Star Hill Ranch Wedding
One of the things I love most about Star Hill Ranch wedding photography is the incredible variety the venue offers. Rather than having every photograph look like it was taken in the same location, Star Hill gives couples an entire little Texas town to use as the backdrop for their wedding photos.
The venue is centered around a historic Main Street surrounded by beautifully restored buildings. Star Hill Ranch was created as a recreation of an early-1900s Texas Hill Country community, with historic structures relocated from around Texas and carefully restored.
That history gives the photographs a character that is difficult to reproduce at a traditional modern wedding venue.
For Annie and Alex, I wanted to take advantage of as many of those surroundings as possible while still keeping the focus where it belongs: on them, their family, and the story of their wedding day.
Wedding Photography at Star Hill Ranch
From the beginning of the day, there were so many little moments worth photographing.
Those are the moments I look for at every wedding—the expressions that happen naturally, the interactions between family members, the excitement before the ceremony, and the little things that may not seem important in the moment but become incredibly meaningful years later.
That’s one of the reasons I love wedding photography so much. A wedding day goes by incredibly quickly. The flowers eventually disappear, the cake gets eaten, the music stops, and the guests go home. What remains are the photographs and the memories they bring back.
My goal is to create photographs that don’t simply show what happened, but actually bring you back to how the day felt.
Annie & Alex’s Family
One of my favorite parts of Annie and Alex’s wedding was seeing them celebrate their marriage while also celebrating their family.
Having a child at a wedding creates so many opportunities for meaningful photographs. There are the obvious family portraits, but some of my favorite images are usually the unscripted ones—the hugs, smiles, little interactions, and moments when everyone simply forgets about the camera.
Those photographs become even more valuable as the years go by.
For Annie and Alex, their wedding wasn’t simply about two people getting married. It was about bringing the people they love together and celebrating the family they have created.
Portraits Around Star Hill Ranch
Star Hill Ranch is an especially fun venue for wedding portraits because there are so many different environments within the property. The historic chapel provides a beautiful backdrop for traditional wedding photographs, while the surrounding oak trees, pathways, historic buildings, and Main Street provide plenty of opportunities for more relaxed and creative portraits.
The venue’s outdoor Arbor is another beautiful option, surrounded by mature oak trees and connected to the other buildings by a winding pathway.
As the day progresses, the character of Star Hill Ranch changes. The warm Texas light begins to soften, the historic buildings take on a different look, and the entire property starts to feel especially romantic.
It’s one of those venues where you can spend an entire wedding day photographing and still find new backgrounds and little locations.
A Wedding Full of Real Moments
When I photograph a wedding, I don’t want the entire day to feel like a photo shoot.
Of course, I love creating beautiful portraits and making sure my couples have those frame-worthy images. But I also want to document everything happening around those portraits.
The laughter.
The tears.
The hugs.
The crazy dance-floor moments.
The look on someone’s face when they see the bride walking down the aisle.
The way a parent looks at their child.
The little moments between a couple when they don’t even realize they’re being photographed.
Those are the photographs that tell the complete story.
That’s the approach I bring to every wedding I photograph, including Star Hill Ranch wedding photography.
Why Star Hill Ranch Is So Great for Wedding Photography
There is a reason Star Hill Ranch has become such a popular Austin-area wedding venue.
The property offers a unique combination of Texas Hill Country scenery and historic Texas architecture, while still being conveniently located near Austin. The venue offers multiple ceremony and reception spaces, including the historic chapel, outdoor Arbor, Main Street/Plaza, Reception Hall, Bride’s Cottage, Groom’s Quarters, and Biergarten.
From a photography perspective, that variety is fantastic.
It means we can create elegant portraits, fun family photographs, romantic couple portraits, candid moments, and dramatic evening images without having to leave the property.
And once the sun goes down, Star Hill Ranch takes on an entirely different personality. The venue describes its evening setting as a place of warm inviting spaces, starry skies, and beautifully lit surroundings.
It’s a photographer’s dream.
